“Scions” was a fantastic prequel! I knew I was going to love it, because it’s written by Josie and she’s amazing, but I was not expecting to fall in love with the story and characters so much. If you read the Starcrossed trilogy, you already know what happens to Daphne and Ajax, but I can assure you that this book will be a surprise and a joy. There’s even a plot twist that left me mind blown! Josephine is definitely a genius!! If you enjoyed the first trilogy, you must read this one: it’s been like returning to my teen years, but with a story perfectly suitable for my adult self. I really can’t wait to read Timeless in April, because I need to see Lucas and Helen again! Thanks Josie for the ARC <3

I have been waiting so long for another book in this series and I liked it! I struggled reading about Daphne because I hate her but it definitively gave me a new perspective of her! The last 100 pages were really good. This book seemed to build the world for Timeless and for that I am soooo excited.

After years of rereading the Starcrossed trilogy, I was so excited to be able to read Scions! This book brought me back into the world that I love so much and it was better than I ever expected it to be. I loved being able to read something from Daphne's perspective. If you've read the trilogy, then you probably thought the same things that I did about Daphne. Josie's writing in Scions, did a great job at humanizing Daphne and making her a character that you can empathize with. I laughed, cried, and screamed while reading, which are all the perfect combination of emotions when reading a book. While I absolutely loved the storyline of this book, my favorite part was how there were so many evident parallels between Daphne and Helen, and Daphne's relationship with Ajax to Helen's relationship with Lucas. Along with this, there were many surprising moments (that I won't spoil) that have me dying to read the other books that Josie has planned for this series.

Thank you NetGalley for providing an eARC of Scions, by Josephine Angelini.

As a reading, coming this this book, having not read the Starcrossed trilogy, all the characters and concepts were completely fresh for me. Despite this, the book so so well written, that I had no confusion, and feel it could easily be the novel you being the series on, rather than reading it through publication order.

Daphne, as the protagonist, allows for a lot of mythological parallels to be drawn, and used for inspiration, which Angelini does very well. Having Helens Face, and being stalked in the same was that the original Daphne experiences, gives hints of irony for readers who are family with greek mythology.

In a lot of ways, this narrative reads like Romeo and Juliet, featuring themes of forbidden love, familial rivalries, and the continuous build of drama. I would like to note, that this book is not a retelling of any story or myth, but there is clear inspiration, and symbolism in names, like using Daphne, Ajax, Talus, etc.

After finishing Scions, I am very inclined to read the original trilogy that this comes from, having fallen in love with the characters, and I do wonder what happens to Daphne, post her story and into Helen's.

“More often than not, star-crossed lovers are their own worst enemies.” Josephine Angelini

I fell in love with the Starcrossed trilogy by Josephine Angelini almost ten years ago. Its unique storyline and fascinating parallels to the Trojan War delighted my teenage heart. So, you can imagine my excitement when I discovered that new books were being released in the series!

Set in New York during the early 90s, Daphne, daughter of Zeus and Heir to the House of Atreus, has reached the age where men can’t help fighting over her. However, when she finds her cursed face — the replica of her descendant, Helen of Troy — painted on the walls of buildings and subways in ways that expose the deepest parts of herself, Daphne becomes obsessed with searching for the mysterious artist. Unfortunately, as she tracks Ajax Delos, Daphne discovers that he is not only a fellow Scion but the Son of Apollo from the House of Thebes, her sworn enemy! Compelled by the Fates to feel hatred and murder towards one another, these star-crossed lovers are determined to break the cycle that has killed so many of their ancestors. Will they succeed, or will history continue repeating itself?

Full of nostalgia, Scions dove straight into the action and didn’t relent until the end. Nevertheless, I struggled to enjoy the story like I had its predecessors. Despite being written in first-person, the narrator felt the need to overly repeat past events like the reader hadn’t been right there with them. Not to mention how familiar everyone got with one another so quickly. While I initially swooned over Daphne and Ajax, their romance felt rushed, and their conversations often felt choppy. Also, readers were expected to retain a large gulp of Greek mythology rather than easing into it like in the previous books.

Despite my criticism, there were many moments I did enjoy and found that I couldn’t put this book down. I loved how Scions brought everything in a full circle, giving us a history of the Houses of Atreus and Thebes that clarified Helen and Lucas’s story arcs. I am looking forward to the next book, Timeless, mainly because it’ll bring Helen and Lucas front and center!! Ahh!

*Thank you, NetGalley and the publisher, for providing me with a pre-release copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own!*
