A charming story as always with oz. The plot and world is beautifully imaginative. But the adventuring party in this book is one of the lamest in the series. They take amazing fantasy lands and can dry them out. However the book is still a lovely quick read.
Perfectly acceptable. This was my favorite when I was a kid, but now I'm just kind of okay with it. Like Voyage of the Dawn Treader, it's a nearly random series of peculiar encounters on a long voyage, and that like that book, this one doesn't age well once you're into, you know, narrative? But it's still kind of fun, and there are good bits (Zeb sneaks off to steal garygoyle wings, and is back like a paragraph later with no explanation of how he did it, or why he even thought he'd be good at it in the first place) that defy explanation but just kind of work. There are too many animal companions (Jim and Eureka and all the tiny piglets who sometimes talk and sometimes are silent, as needed by the plot) when all one really wants is a Billina to carry one through.
This has never been one of my favorite Oz books. Not bad, though, and very creative: vegetable people, wooden gargoyles with hinged wings, and fruit that makes you invisible.
This was another easy read in the series, but my liking of it didn’t increase. I did like that characters from previous books were brought back for the little adventure.

I didn't need the Wizard to come back. So many of these just feel like Baum throwing random ideas at a wall and trying to see what sticks. After the first one, there is barely any overarching plot or themes. Just, look, here's a quirky new character. Look, here's a land made out of X material and the people are made of X material. It's intriguing at first, but mind-numbingly dumb after a while.

The execution needs polishing. It's too over the place. It's hard to care about most of the new characters until the second part, which could be a separate story.
