I have really enjoyed all of Burroughs memoirs. Most of them have been fairly light with a dark edge...this book was just plain scary. The final line gave me chills. I also really wanted to give Burroughs a huge hug. The part with the groceries pissed me off. It also made me appreciate my family!

Well that was gut wrenching. Would recommend listening to the audio book to hear the music written for it.

What I learned: I love Augusten Burroughs... when he's being funny.

This memoir was intense, dark, and, frankly, terrifying. It's a testament to Burrough's writing that it was so moving and unsparing. At the same time, I found myself yearning for the stories in Possible Side Effects.

This wasn't my favorite of his. I started out liking it better than I did by the end. In Running with Scissors, we learned about his life with his crazy mom and her therapist, and here we learn about his life before that, when he still lived with his dad. It's sad that both of his parents were like this, although his dad just seems scary. Between reading a bunch of Augusten's memoirs, and his brother's memoir, I really feel like I knew this family, but this one brought another dimension. If you've never read any of his work, I would not recommend starting with this one, because it's not one of the best, though.

I have always enjoyed Augusten Burroughs style of writing. This was dark & emotional but brilliantly written. Heartbreaking really. But I loved it.
