The story is about Josh and Sophie Newman and Nicholas Flamel, the famous alchemyst. They're on the run because Dr. Dee wants the last two pages of the book of Abraham the Mage, which holds the secret of eternal life. Josh has managed to rip out the two most important pages before the book was stolen. But now, they're being chased by things they didn't even consider possible.

It's been a while since I've read it (3 years), but I really liked the story. It's filled with action and magic. I love magic..

I read this entire book thinking the author had pulled the idea of Nicholas Flamel and the Philosopher's Stone from Harry Potter. I felt really silly when I discovered - after finishing the book - that Nicholas Flamel was a real person, and legends surrounding him are much older than 1997! Knowing this definitely makes me appreciate the author's world building a lot more.

The story itself had me sitting on the fence. I didn't dislike this one, but I didn't love it either. Characters were passable and it had a decent plot. But for some reason I wasn't completely drawn in. I give it three stars - right in the middle.

I will read book two because I already own it, and who knows. It might surprise me.

This is YA (middle school read in my opinion) so lets make sure to keep that in mind. First off, this is not related to Harry Potter! This is a cute story but nothing mind melting, I did want to begin the second book right at the end so perhaps I will. I may ask my 8 year old to read it over the summer because she likes fantasy too.

This was a strange book for me. I flew through the beginning and got stuck in the middle and by the end I was flying through it again. I don't really think it had anything in particular to do with the book itself I honestly just think it was the fact that I didn't want to read it at that point but being over 100 pages in I wasn't willing to stop.

The plot of this is amazing. I love anything to do with mythology and magic. Plus the fact that Harry Potter mentions Nicholas Flamel was what really made the name stick with me. I must say that this book did not disappoint. There was action and it was fast paced. The magic added a wonderful element as well as the prophecy that was hinted at throughout the novel.

As for the characters I loved Nicholas and his wife Perenell. They were fun and awesome and totally the kind of people you wish you could have as friends. Sophie was the twin that I actually liked. She was smart and thoughtful and didn't rush into things. Her brother Josh on the other hand really got on my nerves after awhile. He was brash and reckless and was jealous of his sister just because a certain thing didn't happen to him as well.

If you're a fan of magic and mythology I definitely recommend you check this out. It's a relatively quick read and will have you rooting for the characters to succeed.

Some good ideas, but this book is just dull. It reads like volume 1 of 16, which it probably will be.
Fifty pages in I already knew it would end with nothing resolved.
Josh is as annoying as Jar Jar Binks or Wesley Crusher, and his sister is a cow, drifting around going, '"Wha?"
I won't bother with the rest of the series.

And yes, I am way too old for YA books, but there are plenty out there that I did and do enjoy. This just isn't one of them.
