DNF I couldn't finish the book. Tbh I didn't really start it either. It's more me not the book. I found it hard to read due to how Anne rice writes. I didn't know what was real or fiction and it really confused me as well as how small the print was made it hard for me to concentrate and read it

I tried man, it’s just not my style and while I want to grow in my reading, it was too haunting when Lestat turned Claudia I could only see my daughter…

📍50 States Challenge — Louisiana 📍
Book: Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice
Overall Takeaway: in the voice of Stanley Hudson — “That little girl is a child!” 😬🫠
Ratings:
- ⭐️ Overall: 3/5
- 🌶️ Spice: N/A (classic gothic horror vibes, not romance spice)
- 😬 Cringe: 5/5 (the Claudia situation)
- 💕 Likability: 2/5 (I struggled with these characters)
- 🤔 Believability: 3/5 (it’s vampires, but also… ew)
Review:
Okay… I get it. This book is a classic, it’s iconic, it’s had a huge cultural impact. But honestly? I kind of hated it. The undertones of pedophilia are rampant and it created an energy I just couldn’t get past.
Yes, Claudia is technically an adult woman trapped in the body of a child — but that body is a five-year-old. Go look at your kindergarten photo for reference on how tiny that is. Louis had NO business calling her “lover,” kissing her, or speaking about her with such reverence. It made me feel disgusted, and it goes on for SO long. Honestly, Louis’ relationship with Claudia is pretty much the primary plot.
I can appreciate Anne Rice’s atmospheric writing and how influential this book is, but for me? It was a hard ick.

Captivating and full of sensuality, this book drew me in from the first line. Rice portrays the realm of the vampire both terrifyingly and alluring, with a nearly profound adherence to the metaphysical, making this not just an enjoying read, but also a thought-provoking one. Her characters are structured so complexly, that by the end, you are still ruminating over them, and the ending leaves you yearning for more!

This book is what you get after you’ve watched Twilight and you think, “but what if the vampires were actually very deep existentialism followers with a midlife crisis, a deep rooted gayness and questionable father/daughter relationships?”
