Not my favorite Heyer... Kept waiting for it to be over.
Great fun as always! Georgette Heyer has never failed to disappoint me yet. And this one had a particularly fun adventure amid everything else.
Found this one unaccountably boring. The love at first sight has something to do with it but kinda slow in general.
3.5 Stars. I read entire pages and only knew what was going on because of context clues because the language was so outdated. And Heyer ends the story abruptly as usual. Still, this is one of my preferred Heyer stories - the adventure was definitely more fun than the usual politics. And... I also got my romance. (Although, people's reactions to the romance are almost better than the romance. I wish there could have been more of it.)
It was a fun romp, and had all of Heyer's style, but I didn't get particularly attached to any of the characters, and a lot of them didn't have enough characterization to make them memorable.
Quite a fun adventure/mystery romp, with a side of romance.
I enjoyed the mystery and adventure and absolutely adored the hero. I have a strong preference for Heyer's more emotionally stable heroes, and Jack's tendency to fall into adventures seems to come from his insatiable curiosity rather than any self-destructive impulses. I also enjoyed Nell, though wish she was on-screen more. Watching Jack and Nell together was just lovely.
A scene from fairly early on, when Jack is trying to get Nell to tell him what's really going on:
A scene from fairly early on, when Jack is trying to get Nell to tell him what's really going on:
"A quick, indignant glance at him informed her that the expression in his eyes was one of warm kindness. No one had ever looked at her just like that before, and it had the effect upon her of making her feel, for perhaps the first time in her life, a strong desire to lay the burden of her cares upon other shoulders."
