I’m giving this book 4 stars instead of 5 because it takes so long to build up and the logging jargon is hard to follow at first. But once you’re in the story - you’re really in it. It’s heartwrenching and at times frustrating…but aren’t the best books?

“Damnation Spring”, by Ash Davidson, is a beautifully told, thought-provoking and moving tale about love, work, community, and a memorable family.
Told in a gorgeous prose, this story immerses you in the plight of the Northern California logging community in the 1970s. It’s a slow burn that captures your interest and your heart.
Where did you get this heartbreaking book? At the heartbreaking bookstore. IYKYK.
Thank you to Netgalley, Ash Davidson and Scribner for the ARC in exchange for my honest review! ❤️️

I’m not sure I could lover this book any more.
I would say 3.5 stars. There were definitely parts that were a little slow- could have done without some of the technical logging jargon but overall this was a really good and heartbreaking story. I wish the ending had been a little bit more of an ending.

This book is amazing. I cried so many times. So complex, deep, and truthful. It’s an intimate look at a community far from my own and just felt so honest. Also had the pleasure of meeting the author randomly as I thumbed through the book at a bookstore! A pleasure to read, I got sucked in.

TW: miscarriage, infidelity, death of a child
In 1977 a small logging town on the California coast is threatened by environmentalists disrupting their way of life.
Rich Gunderson is a tree topper, his wife Colleen an amateur midwife. They soon find their way on opposite sides of the conflict. Both ultimately wanting to do what's best for their family.
Told in the perspectives of Colleen, Rich, and their young son Chub, we get a full picture of what's at stake.
Wow. What an emotional ride. I love a good complicated family story and this was exceptional. Definitely not a light hearted read, but the difficult parts were treated with care. So well written, I was quickly immersed in the setting and invested in this family.

I added this book on to my November BOTM box, after seeing Stephen King tweet about how it was his favorite read this year. To quote, he said "Probably the best novel I'll read this year. It's about work and love and characters who ring true... Can't stop thinking about it."
After reading this novel, I can definitely agree with him. This book was such a special read. ❤️
Heavy on the description, you could perfectly picture the redwoods and the forest. There was a bit too much logging jargon, which left me confused at parts. By the end, I felt like a damn logger myself
