High praise for the writing and the storyline that kept me hooked. I couldn't put this book down despite the tangible sense of despair I felt the whole time.
Highlights: vivid characters, strong sense of place, fast-paced story, the writing style
It fell short of 5 stars for me due to the ending. It had that feeling of a story that was always going to end there. I had hopes that she'd come up with something better, but she didn't.

I don’t really go into books with expectation so I can’t say I was disappointed. But, BOTM classified this as literary fiction. To me a beautifully written book can make up for a less than engaging read. I’m sure this term could be dependent on who is rating it, but I wouldn’t even have considered literary fiction as a descriptor for this at all. Dull? Yes. Repetitive? Yes. Impossibly frustrating characters? Yes.

I really loved this book. I’ve always been a sucker for logging, but the characters and the storyline only made it that much better. Highly recommended.

This book was long and very descriptive, so if that’s not your thing I get it. It took me about 40 pages to get into fully. But it was so beautifully crafted I just never wanted it to end. I really was wrapped up in the characters and the town the whole time (mainly Colleen & Rich & shoutout Dot).

The ending was somewhat bleak and could be seen as a bit of a cop out but on the other hand I get it,  it also is the way of a town like this. The never ending tragedies and hardships they may endure.
