In the first handful of chapters there is a fair amount of dubious consent and/or non-consensual sexual activity. There is no forced penetration, but I would still urge caution to anyone who does not want to read about a pushy, aggressive man ignoring a woman saying "don't touch me ever."ohjessjess's review

This story is told at a breakneck speed and feels like a second or third book entry to the series. Very little is explained about the world, the Lore, or the historic feuds between these different paranormal factions. There's very little offered about the supporting characters' motivations either. I feel like the most character development I saw was when the vampire king goads Emma into slaying him at the very end.
The romance is meh. Very rape-fantasy, non consensual and everything in-between. If you're into the reluctant lovers trope, than this one may suit you. I personally prefer this trope to be a slow burn ordeal, where the characters learn to appreciate each other and their relationship grows from there. This one was too insta-love for me. There were issues with consent and trust mentioned by Emmaline and then all of a sudden... she wasn't that bothered by it anymore and decided she loved him after they slept together. No thanks 🤪

I started reading after listening to the full readalong by the Fated Mates podcast, and knowing all the big spoilers did not lessen my enjoyment of this book even a little bit.
Excepting a few scenes, which I'd like to think would not be Like That had this book been written more recently. For those scenes from the beginning, he most certainly Did Not Grovel Enough.
