Re-read MAY 2022 (with Audiobook):

For my initial read of this book, back in like 2010 or 11 (or something in that era), I gave this story 5 stars. I was fairly new to the PNR game around that time, and this story swept me away, with Kresley Cole's sensual firepower. However, many years later, I'm no longer feeling as enamored by this story as I was back then. Granted, I have gobbled up a shit ton of PNR books in the last decade, so I have more defined tastes now. That's not to say that this wasn't enjoyable the 2nd time around - it was! - but it also felt dated, compared today's PNRs, so it didn't check all the boxes for me as much as it did back then. The forced sensuality was one thing that irked me in this because it was excused by the fact that the male protagonist was described as gorgeous, rich, and a king. Had he been an ugly, broke troll, the female protagonist would've been running for the hills and the story would've been classified as Horror instead of Romance.

I LOVED THIS BOOK. I was a little hesitant going into it, but man o man was I greatly pleased. I loved watching Emma's journey and growth. And the best part was I don't feel like it was Lochlain. I feel like while he was the catalyst, she did it on her own. At first I didn't really like her because I thought she was weak, however that's the point. By the end, I felt just like her aunts. Shocked at this warrior who just showed up seemingly out of no where.

I also loved their romance. I loved how it wasn't smooth sailing, even though they both knew that they didn't really have a choice (or at least Lochlain did). I also loved watching them slowly fall for each other, then hit separate turning points that was a quick fall afterward.

Now for some negatives that kept it from a favorite. I found a lot of the lore (lower case L) kinda confusing. Maybe I wasn't paying attention, or stuff will get explained later, but there were a few things that I found confusing throughout and took me from the story for a bit. Also, Annika and Lochlain drove me up the wall (though Lochlain I could deal with). Annika had to know that isolating Emma for her entire IMMORTAL life was not going to work. And her absolute refusal to listen to anyone's point other than hers got on my nerves real quick. Lochlain, I more found him an annoyance. Just his constant one track mind and lying was irritating, but I could live with it.

Overall this was a great introduction into this world. I literally couldn't put it down until I finished it. Can't wait for the next.

Nope.

It wasn't the worst but I wanted more. I was told she was an incredible author and it just ended up being ehh

I got the 2nd books along with the first so I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually but I'm in no rush to finish the series anytime soon

Thanks for reading
