This is my first book by Marquez and it will definitely not be the last. There were a lot of great themes and funny parts in this book that I don’t really even know what I should say about it. 

I see why it is a classic and recommend everyone reads it at least once to know what’s it all about.

 this is a challenging read, as the pacing of the book switches from arduous torture to breakneck speed in the span of one chapter, and there is no central plot to anchor you down. if you want to analyze the text, what works for me is summarizing the key events of the chapter so i don't get mixed up because one chapter can cover 2 - 3 plot points or character arcs.

This was a surprisingly smooth and quick read. The elements of magical realism together with the jungle town and expansive and looping family history really effectively create a dreamlike and colourful atmosphere that was a joy to come back to every evening. You do have to accept that aspects of the book are rather repetitive and the recurring names for different family members are confusing, but this is by design. I found that as soon as you allowed the family's circular motion to simply turn, it was very freeing, but I can understand other reviewers who were turned off by it.

I also wish Márquez had found different metaphors at times than incest ×5 or so
