This book was my little diamond in the rough on bad nights. I listened to it on audiobook, which is perhaps the best way to digest this book as Neil himself is the narrator. It took me months to read, and a very peculiar and unusual thing happened inside of me while I was reading it.
Normally, I love finality and closure. I love good endings. Conversely, I hate when things are drawn out for too long. (This is probably why I hate book series with titles that run in the dozens). But against my character, I chose to draw this book out because I didn't want it to end.

Neil's words were dark and gristly, but never less sweet than ambrosia. He showed me terrible things and lovely things, and he wove it together in a story that would have been irresistible to put down had I made it easier to reach.

Fittingly, my decision to finally end this book took me to a place of ache, and fondness, and I'm ultimately very happy that I was able to let Neil tie the neat ragged ribbon off on this wonder of a book.

I look forward to reading this book again at other stages of my life.

The book is more fun when Richard met Anaesthesia and much much much more fun when he met Lamia.

This book is super Neil Gaimany. If you like Neil you will like this book. Neil Gaiman is also really into fantastical markets, as one features prominently in this book as well as Stardust, and I wouldn't be surprised if they pop up in other books. It kind of reminds me of a Fantasy version of the Hitchhikers Guide, in that in focuses on an ordinary guy thrown into unbelievable fantasy situation who at first is bewildered and then proceeds to make many wry comments about the fantastical nature of events. A quick read it was entertaining and the plot was interesting and moved at a nice pace.

A very well written story if a bit slow. The world building is very well done and I connected with the characters but sometimes wished the story would just get on with it.
