this was awful, like awful. It didn't further the plot from the last book. All it did was change the story entirely.
This book felt like the first draft of American Royals that McGee's publisher didn't like so she rewrote it for the first novel. Everything is changed for no reason, lemme just give you a breakdown.
*Beatrice* - Honestly kind of annoying tho i do appreciate the whole female independence queen thing they had going on there between her and Robert. Connor is completely wiped out of this story. Whilst I thought he was annoying and whiny and wayyy to desperate in the last book (something that McGee does carry over into this book), he can't just disappear like that. I do think the relationship between Teddy and Beatrice was nice and developed well (although the makeout scene seemed chucked in there to get the YA effect.) however it felt too sudden after connor's random departure at the beginning of the novel.
*Samantha* - Well developed as a character! Had nice little revelation moments, but did not like Marshall. He just felt like a carbon copy of the old Samantha with the token POC added in. I do appreciate the fact that Sam got a bigger role in this story and has some sort of purpose at the end of the novel, unlike beatrice whose rejection of the marriage feels like an attempted feminist power move that kinda flopped.
*Nina* - No feelings at all, none, wasn't even given enough page time to be worth it as a character. Her relationship with Ethan was cute but completely out of the blue.
*Daphne* - My favourite till the end when she suddenly, for no reason, runs out of the wedding and tries to profess her love for Ethan. It felt wayyy out of her character, but the proposal scene between her and Jefferson was well written.
If you liked the first book don't read the second one, please, for my sanity.

I never want to leave the [b:American Royals|43744300|American Royals (American Royals, #1)|Katharine McGee|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1551859882l/43744300._SY75_.jpg|62164888] universe. And not just because it seems like a much happier, coronavirus-free place—although that definitely helps if you're looking for a bit of an escape right now! [a:Katharine McGee|13499819|Katharine McGee|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1473861019p2/13499819.jpg] has created such a fun reading experience with these two, and I really and truly hope there is going to be a third. (Just to clarify, she didn't exactly set it up for a third, but she also didn't close the door completely, in my opinion.)
SPOILERS BELOW IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE FIRST BOOK
If I could live in any book right now, I think it would have to be this one. I just love all the characters, and while their storylines bobbed and weaved in ways I wouldn't necessarily have predicted, McGee did executed each of them flawlessly.
I rarely enjoy sequels just as much as the original, but I have to say, Majesty is every bit as wonderful as American Royals. If you're looking for a fun but smart YA pick to lift your spirits, look no further!

Spoiler
In Majesty, we're back with our favorite cast of royals, right after the King has died and Beatrice is preparing to become queen—and get married. Her relationship with Sam is on the rocks, which drives Sam into the arms of a new character in a plot to get back at Beatrice and Teddy. Daphne is still trying to con her way to a crown, and Nina finds herself in an even more unexpected romantic entanglement. This book is a romantic roller coaster, and honey, I am HERE FOR IT.If I could live in any book right now, I think it would have to be this one.
