Imagine writing an alternate history of the US and deciding to keep in slavery? One of the many weird choices of a low-stakes fun book. I’ve read the first in this series and will likely read the third just for resolution, but most of the characters are wishy washy (who would possibly want that prince?!) and dull. I almost root for the villain because at least she has a personality?
It may be cheesy, but I'm enjoying the royal drama and am excited to read the next book.

The portrayl of women in this book really bothered me. They're all a female trope - the tom boy best friend turned love, the scheming beauty, the all American good girl. The author digs so hard into these stereotypes that you never really get to know them as people.

Oh boy!! The drama…and that’s it? The most loathsome character gets away with everything with just a small repercussion which might actually not even a repercussion!?

Wow. I waited so long to read this sequel and can honestly say I wasn't expecting ANYTHING that happened in it. Because of this, I have to be honest and say I both loved and hated it. More on that below, but this is your possible spoiler warning.
I did not expect all of the ships from the first book to be destroyed, and to be honest, I was a bit annoyed about it. I enjoyed Teddy and Bee, but was also rooting for Sam. I did enjoy her with Marshall, though. I also learned that I dislike Nina a lot, not as much as Daphne, but she is so fickle, and frankly, a really bad friend. I also think Jefferson got the short end of the stick in both books. I feel really bad for him. And Himari forgiving Daphne is a joke.
Let's say that sure, all the turns in this sequel make sense and everything pans out. Until the ending, which basically.... undoes the entire book. I get that it was supposed to be this big feminist stand or whatever, and maybe it's the limitation of writing this as a YA book, but... I dunno. I was kind of disappointed about it.
And there's no sign of a third book, so... that's depressing. I liked this book, but also didn't like it.
