As with many books, I wanted more from the denouement. Everything resolved too quickly. I needed more time to linger with the characters and the story.

If I had known this was reminiscent of the Great Gatsby, I wouldn't have picked it up. I'm not a fan of that book. However, I stuck with it and ended up enjoying more than I thought I would after the first third of the book. It's more like a mix of The Great Gatsby and Practical Magic, but sapphic.

The writing quality was a bit subpar, but the plot was engaging. The story kept drawing me in, and I enjoyed reading this, but the prose quality was a bit distracting at times, especially at the beginning. Overall, a worthwhile read for a good time with some dark magic.

I found this book really tedious.  It was a fascinating premise with a darker take on magic than I had read in other fantasy books.  Unfortunately, the efforts to keep a tight string of tension made all character interactions seem forced.  It just sort of dragged on.  I listened to the audiobook and was not a fan of the way each section started with a chapter read by a voice actor who enunciated as if he was on stage at a community theater while poorly mixed instrumental music ebbed and crescendoed to build suspense.  It was hard to hear his words.  This would have been fine if it was just a brief quote or something but it was whole chapters that went on for minutes.   The writing itself was good.  Maybe this would be a good choice for someone who enjoys dark fantasy with tension so thick you could cut it with a knife.  Personally, I found it tiresome in a way that made me grind my teeth and consider leaving it a DNF.

Captivating read with many strong women, which builds into a page turner that is hard to put down. Sincerely enjoyed the collision of witchcraft, the roaring 20s, and prohibition.

A knock off Practical Magic. I found the main character frustrating and I wasn’t rooting for her. The book felt very repetitive (
like how many times over do we need to establish that Emmeline has trouble asking for help and that there is some thread between her and Annie?)
Ultimately I didn’t care about the characters enough to be invested in the story and that ultimately made it fall flat.
