After Broken Souls and Bones rocked my soul, I knew I had to dive into The Ever King by LJ Andrews. I kept seeing it all over my feed being described as Pirates of the Caribbean meets dark fae romantasy, and trust me—it lives up to the hype. 🏴‍☠️

I haven’t read the original Broken Kingdoms series that this spins off from, so the beginning was a bit overwhelming with lore and info dumps—but once the story found its rhythm? It was unputdownable.

Erik Bloodsinger—King of the Ever, the Serpent, the poison-blooded pirate of your morally gray dreams—might be the most unhinged, irresistible male main character I’ve ever met. He’s brutal, broken, and completely gone for the FMC, Livia. And the nicknames? “Songbird,” “Love”? I need therapy, thank you.

Livia, aka our Songbird, is a refreshingly relatable heroine. She has anxiety, panic attacks, and actual human emotions, which made her feel so grounded. She’s stubborn, smart on occasion, and I appreciated that she pushed back when needed. I do wish we saw more depth in her powers—they kept telling us she was powerful, but didn’t show enough of it.

Their dynamic is dark, emotional, and intense. There's a childhood connection woven into their story that softens the “kidnap and fall in love” setup. Instead of feeling like Stockholm Syndrome, it feels fated and inevitable—like they were always going to find each other again.

This book is a wild storm of fae magic, pirate lore, forbidden love, and that irresistible enemies-to-lovers tension we all crave. ⚓️✨ Between the morally gray chaos and the emotional slow-burn romance, I was hooked.

The Ever King is a captivating dark fantasy romance that masterfully combines elements of adventure, magic, and intense emotion. I did not find the world building overwhelming which was nice since I am newer to the Fantasy genre.

The story centers around Erik Bloodsinger, the Ever King and Livia Ferus, daughter of the king of Night Folk fae. Erik, seeks revenge against the man who killed his father and imprisoned him beneath the waves.

Read if you like:
• Strong FMC
• Enemy’s to lovers
• Forced proximity
• Slow burn
• Revenge
• Elements of Viking and Pirate lore

As a Romantasy lover this book checked all the boxes. Good world building and interesting characters moves the story along. Book 2 should be very good.

I’ll start by saying I’m definitely not a romantasy fan. In fact, I tend to avoid the genre altogether. But for some reason, I keep coming back to these stories to test my limits and this one surprised me in a good way.

Imagine Beauty and the Beast meets Pirates of the Caribbean. That vibe had me hooked from the start.

The plot was pretty straightforward and predictable but I appreciated that the author did not throw in unnecessary twists just for shock value. Everything felt intentional with clear foreshadowing from the very first chapter.

The magic system was a bit underdeveloped and sometimes confusing but I was willing to overlook that because the characters were genuinely entertaining and brought the story to life.

I am actually looking forward to book two which says a lot about how invested I got in this world.

I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author and NetGalley!
