Oh, the ridiculous time travel melodrama of my youth! This was actually better than I remembered. Yes, Annie and Strat do find TRUE LOVE at FIRST SIGHT, and yes, the ending’s a bit abrupt and not terribly well set-up. But I liked that Cooney kept this away from being total fluff by emphasizing how hard it would have been to be a woman—of any class—in the 19th century. Wow, books for teenage girls used to actually have empowering, feminist messages in them? Too bad that’s gone out of style. *cough[book: Twilight]yesIstillhaveissuescough*

Though I remember pretty distinctly reading this when I was 12, I never read the sequels. (Maybe our tiny town library didn’t have them?) I intend to remedy that now.

I loved this series when I was in middle school, so when I saw it in the library of the school where I teach, I had to pull it off the shelf and read it again. Lucky for me, it brought back the same fuzzy feelings about the main character and her predicament.

Annie is graduating high school, but her grease monkey boyfriend is not at any of the events, preferring to work on some old cars. Annie, who craves the epic romance of 100 years ago, wants to try to change him. She visits him at the old mansion, which is scheduled to be torn down, but when she realizes she cannot distract him from his old cars, she takes a walk through the ballroom of the mansion, imagining the grand parties that must have taken place 100 years ago. Suddenly, she falls through time, appearing in front of Strat, the heir to the mansion 100 years before. Annie quickly falls in love with Strat and finds herself wanting to stay in the past, but knowing her present is where she belongs.

I think I loved this book as a teen because I dreamed of doing exactly what Annie did. I read predominately historical fiction, and always felt I belonged in the past (until I learned about the advantages of modern medicine, of course). Reading as an adult, I found Cooney's characters incredibly stagnant and the plot incredibly predictable, but I was so caught up in the story (and the nostalgia at rereading) that I didn't mind one bit.

My only complaint now is that I had sold my copies of the series before moving out of my parents' house, and now the books seem to be out of print; most unfortunately of all, though, is the fact that my local library only has the last in the four book series, so I won't be able to continue the series until I can track them down!

I refuse to reread these, cause I am entirely convinced that my love for them is entirely based in nostalgia. One of my favorite book series when I was 13

I loved this book. I stayed up half the night reading this book and it was definitely worth it. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I really like Strat and kind of don't want him to marry anybody while Annie(Anna Sophia) is gone. I hope they meet again soon.

Excellent book and I really must get the next one.
