Not a terrible little short. I will admit I had trouble staying in this one, but I think I just struggle with short stories in general.

The vampires, witches and humans of the Bayou have been feuding since before anyone can remember but after Jane brokered a peace things were looking up. Now they are back at each other's throats and it's all over a magical artefact.

Leo sends Jane to the Bayou to restore order and bring the warring parties to heel.

The Jane Yellowrock short stories and novellas have always been a bit of a mixed bag. Some of them really feel like scraps that should have stayed on the editing room floor. Others are brilliant and add both depth and insight into Jane Yellowrock's world.

Thankfully this is in the latter group and is a pretty damned amazing lead-in to Shadow Rites due out next week.

REREAD 2021

I have to admit that I kind of skimmed through this book this time around. It was OK, but I did zone out a couple of times. That may have been because of the book, or because of my own current health. And I find Hvam's voice very comfortable and soothing, so I've fallen asleep to it before.

I can't say I noticed any major character developments with this listen, other than some info about Edmund and how Jane reacts to things. it's not a bad book, just didn't do much for me this time around.
So I'm rounding it down to 3/5 star rating. It's still a good book, but nothing special, you know?

Listened to as an audiobook.

A fast-paced and fun read, with a lot of action, and still a bit more of character development.
Just my cup of tea!

I love Edmund and especially the way he has charmed Jane. My favorite line is when he smells Alex and says “ how can he stand to smell himself “
