A new artist and art style gave this volume a boost. Hopefully this continues and continues to grow.

So, I like that we got a bit of a Kendra back story, that was only really alluded to in the main story.

The art is really nice in this book. Jamaica looks beautiful in it.

However, Kendra has an accent. When Bianca Lawson played her she played her with a very distinct accent. This Kendra sounds like any teenager from anywhere, her voice, her uniqueness is totally missing from this story. It's been the same the whole way through when you read Kendra's part, but they should have made more effort when the entire book was Kendra-focused.

Also, why isn't this a Kendra one-shot? This shouldn't be part of the main Buffy series. A panel at the beginning and end of Kendra telling the Scooby gang her story would have improved it immensely. As it stands it shouldn't have been part of the main story.

So far one of the only things I've been enjoying about this reboot is the chance for Kendra to get some more screen time. Her appearance on the show was so brief and so sad.

The Best Of: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #13

1. An issue solely dedicated to Kendra and her backstory, which is something we get so little of in the TV series? Hella yes! Justice and more character development for Kendra.

2. Shout-out to the art by Rosemary Valero-O'Connell and the coloring by Raul Angulo & Eleonora Bruni! Combined, they really bring Kendra's world to life in a way that is vivid and distinctive from Buffy's world.

3. Kendra expressing a very relatable mood. "I feel so far from everything. The truth is... I really like being alone."

4. Aunt Vea and Zabuto having the argument about Kendra being a Slayer that is actually the show's central conflict. "She's just a girl, Zabuto. She needs encouragement, she needs something to be happy about, and her home here... makes her happy." "A Slayer doesn't need to be happy-- A Slayer needs to be fearless."

5. Aunt Vea not putting up with any s*** from Zabuto because she cares about Kendra and her life and happiness outside of being a slayer.

6. The clear sexism and patriarchy in how the Watcher's Council views the world being on display with Zabuto and how he treats both Vea and Kendra.

7. "I am so in love with Jamaica, the thought of having to leave some day makes me sick. The energy here is vital to how I've kept my head during all of this. And how could I ever get tired of this view?"

8. Kendra and her watcher squabbling on a motorcycle as they chase after vampires. Honestly, what a dream!

9. The evil vampire having some seriously valid points about how Slayers are treated and how the Jamaicans were colonized by the British and how tourism continues as an extension of that.

10. "Jamaica is ferocious. Jamaica is tenacious. I'll never leave... part of me will always be here."

Yes yes yes! Love that good good Kendra backstory, love that the comics are giving her more love than the show. Hopefully that will mean she gets to stay alive.
