Born of Embers is the first book within the Phoenix Rising series. From what I remember, it was an interesting enough to keep the pages turning. As of right now, I can't really say anything differently than that. For once, I will just have to go off of a rating from a couple of months ago and hope I still feel the same whenever I jump into the sequel.

That being said, I'm not sure how I feel about how the ending. It just kind of felt weird that Michael randomly came back into the picture. Especially since no one realized that he was stalking her until the very end. Hopefully, I get some answers in the next book. Guess I will have to find that out. . .

4.5 Rounded Up

This is my second reread.... and somehow I have not reviewed this gem before?! I am honestly shocked. I think I read it the first time in 2018, and now, in the crazy year of 2020, I find myself falling into the lives and adventures of this amazing group once more.

Nix, full name Annika, is a beautiful, though damaged girl running from a past few would believe. Landing in Alaska after being accepted into College, she quickly finds herself wrapped up the world she has always been a part of - even if she didn't know it.

Deeply emotional and sometimes scarring, this Reverse Harem introduces mythological shifters and a magical world hidden from human eyes. It's a slow burn, both emotionally and physically, offering the characters a chance to grow and learn about each other. Tinged with danger and a mystery that harkens from years before, this is a good start to a captivating series.

My Final Verdict on Born of Embers

Second read through, yet somehow my first review.... great series, fantastic start and emotionally enveloping. There is heat, though tempered in this first book, along with action and mystery. I would recommend.

a unicorn and a kraken are roommates…

And there’s a kitsune, a gargoyle, a puck, and a phoenix too for good measure. There’s no sex in this book but there are violent deaths, mention of grape, run always, and heavy petting. The whole story doesn’t get going until book 3, but this one is a good start.

The world is interesting, and how magic plays into it. The setting is very spartan, just generic Alaska and no real depth of location or setting. The characters are the best part of this book since the plot is on a slow boil. Wylde is building their relationship slowly with completely normal interactions that make them likable. There are no throwaways.

The action sequences are stunted. They are too wordy for the little bit of movement that’s happening.

Overall, I like this book and series. I will finish rereading them all as my schedule permits. Especially once the RH really gets going, in about book 3, then it gets going in plot too.

Until Next Time,

Forced

Nix's connection to the guys is a little forced and relies too heavily on the supernatural aspect to compensate for not taking the time to develop the relationships. Wylde creates this intricate character in Nix, and then repeatedly just abandons those things that make Nix Nix in order to jump the story to the next pont. Its disappointing. It doesn't make the story unreadable, but it does severely distract from the enjoyment. Additionally, the ending is intended to be a cliffhanger but instead come across as though Wylde just stopped mid chapter, like oh hit my word count for book 1, let's call it a day and start book 2. I loath cliffhangers, but if you are going to do one, do it properly and do it well.

Solid start

I enjoyed this book. I thought it was a good start to the series. I didn't totally love the MC, but I think I'll like her more as she starts to open up and becomes more of a bada**

These characters are so good! I'm not too sure where the plot is going to go, but I'm ready to see how these characters handle it.

The “pick me” energy and internalized misogyny was so prevalent in this book that I couldn’t enjoy it. “I was thrown off by the fact that she wasn’t screeching or crying the way most girls did when they were insulted,” “plus weren’t some girls afraid of carbs or some shit?”

The boys are condescending as shit “I was trying for a reference a girl like you would recognize.” And when asked to eat a salad, one of them got upset and said “you haven’t spent much time around guys, have you?” They shame her for almost falling prey to the shifter in the truck in the beginning instead of just explaining who he was and warning her against him in the future.

Also, at one point, one of the boys says “I wonder if she’ll taste like smoke and honey when I lick across her her caramel thighs” and another one of the boys thinks that he always forgets that the first boy is a “kinky asshole.” Since when is that kinky?

Besides all the above, the writing (especially the overuse of exclamation points) made this read as a YA book. Additionally, I understand that everyone has different responses to trauma but the level of abuse that Nix has suffered means it wasn’t particularly believable how quickly she became comfortable with the guys, or honestly how quickly she became sassy and snarky.

Lots of telling not showing. Time wasn’t real (a chapter would cover a single hour and then we would skip a week between chapters).

The book ended on a cliffhanger but even that isn’t enough for me to keep reading the series. There are lots of incredible RH series, and imo this isn’t one of them.

Born of embers

Since the fourth book in this series just got releast I decided to reread the the first books. This is still a great and suspenseful story. Nix has had a difficult life and just escaped her home. She moved as far from sunny Florida she could manage and ended up going to school in Alaska. There she is thrust into the world of shifters, learning about herself and what she is. Meeting mystical shifters that falls hard for her and want to protect her. She has to learn to trust others and survive when her past comes back to haunt her while the shifters in power would love nothing less than for Nix to be a breeding machine. Her being the only known shifter of her kind is going to make her new freedom that much harder to keep.
