Though I'm sure I didn't catch all the irony and satire in the book, I did very much enjoy the bits I was able to catch. I love Swift's style of writing and I especially loved Part Four of the book, when Gulliver has completely lost it; it makes for quite the revealing commentary on human nature!

I adore this book so damn much! I wish I could write satire like Swift but I'd settle for his analytic powers.

Boring but ok.
I have to say, I was expecting this book to be much less interesting than it was. The book was actually pretty easy to follow along with. Considering how old the book is and the fact that older vernacular tends to be more difficult to follow along with, I was pleasantly surprised by what this book was.
That said, the book was a little more perverse than I thought it would be. There was a lot of scatalogical humor and references in this book that confused me. I am not sure why Swift went there, if it was supposed to be part of the low brow humor of the book, or if he had some kind of obsession with the stuff. But to be reading a 18th century work of fiction and then all of a sudden come across a scene where Gulliver pees on a fire to put it out in the city of Lilliput was kind of jarring. It's not really what you expect from a lot of literature we read from the time.
In some ways he does sort of let his freak flag fly with some of this stuff. He talks about molestations and sexual stuff happening in Brobdignagnin as well which jar you a little as well. I am not sure why he goes there, other than to continue the theme of low brow absurdist satire.
So like I said, this book isn't everything you'd expect from a book written by an 18th gentleman, but I kind of like that about it. There is some humor in it that translates well and, like I said, he definitely seems to be a bit absurdist in the way he makes satirical allegory.
So in the end, I think I would recommend this book. It's a little silly and crass, but I enjoyed it enough. It is definitely a book you shouldn't judge by it's cover.

The first two stories are delightfully imaginative and fun to read. After that, Swift's social commentary gets out of hand. He gets very long-winded and his criticism of English society gets in the way of his storytelling. Gulliver's epilogue is commentary enough and pulls nicely at the reader's emotions but I couldn't appreciate it because, by the time I got to it, I only wanted the book to end as soon as possible.
