An Ember in the Ashes series will now be enshrined as one of my all-time favorite series. This book is a culmination of each character's storylines. I'm glad that there are no loose ends left. We find the fate of Laia, Elias, and Helene at the end of the world. Despite all the sorrow and pain at the end, there is this underlying bittersweet feeling as the survivors try to find joy in their future despite their painful past. We will always remember our sins, but perhaps we will make better choices in the future. Love is painful, but it also helps sustain us. Perhaps that is enough to make life worth it. Like Throne of Glass, this series begins with such a simple plotline, but has developed into a profound story.
Now, combine these themes with Tahir's superb writing. It's okay that what little romance is there is closed door/fade to black, because she set a beautiful emotional scene leading up to it. I must have highlighted so many lines not because of what they said, but how they said it.
It's a good thing I started this series when all the books have been released so I could read it all through in one go while everything is fresh.
Spice scale (as defined by Mysterious Galaxy): 🔥🔥 [Keeping it PG-13]

Ultimately, this ended up being a nice wrap up of the series, but it was a struggle to get there. I almost multiple times because the pacing was just really off. All of the battles and big important turning points happen super quick and come nowhere, while the in-between
stuff just dragged on. Also the character deaths really bugged
me in this one. I don’t object to killing off characters and, in fact, I think it’s necessary in books that revolve around war, because it shows what the stakes really are. But in this book most of the deaths were completely unnecessary and easily avoided if people just didnt do stupid stuff like rushing head long into a fight that someone already had under wraps. Ultimately it seemed like the deaths (and the side characters themselves) were added to give the main characters Something to be upset about rather than serving a full purpose.
