This book was my first true dive into the fantasy world. I’ve read what people would call romanatsy, and to be honest I wasn’t sure if a book without romance or a psychological thriller aspect to it would keep my interest.

Nevertheless, I dove into it without really knowing much about Tolkien’s mythical world. To my surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

I instantly fell in love with Bilbo. He is doing his best to live a well-rounded and respectable hobbit lifestyle, when in comes Gandalf. From that point on, Bilbo was thrust into an adventure that he honestly isn’t quite sure he wants to have.

The relationships that he forms in the brotherhood of Thorin and Company is absolutely what makes this book spectacular. Each of the different personalities that Tolkien writes really helps the reader connect to the characters of this story, and the character development was done beautifully.

Some parts of the book dragged, but when taking into consideration the time that this book was written in, that is to be expected when comparing it to “modern” storylines. Tolkien, while building a magnificent and complex world, takes the reader on a journey of self discovery, friendship, and what it truly means to be courageous.

this feels like sacrilege, but i never really got into it. the whimsical style is infectious and i loved reading about gandalf and gollum, but the rest didn't do much for me. hopefully i'll like the lotr trilogy more
