Multiple callbacks to previous books in the series. You really should not jump straight into this one. But it is so good! Witty! Creepy. Howard's prose is as sharp and as dangerous as Cabal's mind. And the fact that Horst is the protagonist for about 2/3 of the book is a pleasant occurrence. Very different, and yet fans of previous books will find many of the same elements which engaged them through the other books.
Readers who might have lamented the dearth of strong female characters in Book 3 will be pleased to see multiple instances in this book. Sadly, Miss Barrow is not one of them. But I hold out hopes that there will eventually be subsequent adventures and that she might return in one of those.

Cabal, having survived Lovecraftian horrors and forged some sort of special relationship with Nyarlothotep, is carried to safety through a garden of horrors by a loving brother vampire. Our man may have his soul back (though he is markedly less human than his brother, the aforementioned vampire). His brother then cajoles him into fighting zombies, demons, and financiers. Somehow they acquire air power. And witches.
Nicely constructed and often laugh out loud funny. Cabal is not a lovable scamp. I really like the soulless vampire more. But man, when he calls the creeping evil by its real name, I loved him.
I was disappointed in the lack of zebras.

Хорст, який щиро засмучується щоразу, коли щось стається з його шмотками (незважаючи на пекло, яке розвергається в цей час навколо нього) - просто муд фор лайф.

The best one yet! Now I need to reread all of them to prepare fully for Cabal V

I am surprised this happened, but--as preexistingly fond of Horst as I am, and I am, extremely--I got sort of sick of him halfway through this book. Or rather, I started to miss his brother. But I am too damn fond of Horst and of this stupid series to really complain too much, and this was a funny and relatively coherent installment, and they were really cute together. I miss Leonie, though.

When have I read a Cabal brothers novel and not loved it?
Nothing complex to say here. Just a joy.

so much fun. admittedly, this is the 4th in the series, and my first encounter with said series, so i'm definitely going to have to go back and read the first three. basically:
Johannes is a necromancer. his brother Horst is a vampire. both are somehow wrapped into a plot to raise an otherworldly army to take over the world, with supernaturals and secret societies at the helm. circuses, automatic weaponry, ridiculously adjective-laden passages, and flying warcraft all feature prominently.
yes, yes, more vampires and lycanthropes and things that go bump in the night. 'yawn,' you may say. or 'boring, done, to death,' et al. fine. however: if you are a fan of the politely badass Gail Carriger novels, these may also be for you. or, if you are a fan of humor such as this:
"For the first time Horst was beginning to see that the true weakness of a vampire is not at all the business with bursting into flame in direct sunlight, inconvenient though it may be. Nor was it a vulnerability to stakes through the heart as, when one pauses to really think about it, that's rather a vulnerability of all animals. Astonishing yet true. Running water did not hinder him, nor did holy water or garlic cause him any great dismay beyond 'Oh, I'm wet' and 'Oh, that's quite smelly.' In short, being a vampire was not nearly as unpleasant as it might be been but for the one great weakness that was the reliance on human blood."
