Overall a fairly boring instalment of the series. I love Horst but he is not as much fun to read about as Cabal. That being said, I live for the moments with the brothers interacting and moving on from the events of the first book, it warms the cockles of my heart.
For all of the action in this book, the plot never really felt like it was moving forward at a decent pace. I did not find Horst to be nearly as enjoyable a character as Johannes who plays a minor role. This is my least favorite of the 4 books in the series.

funny
I mean, I might be biased: I love autumn, I love adventure, I love British humor - and I love a smart hand on the tiller of a story. Sure, it could be argued that there are a couple of moments that feel a bit rushed and the end is nearly an anti-climax (although really it's just more of a semi-cliffhanger) - but who cares? Who cares about that when you've got characters who you just want to spend time with? Johannes and Horst together do something I never quite imagined: they make Johannes Cabal stories even better than they already were. With any luck, we'll see more to come - because there's room, damn it, in this world for a necromancer of some little infamy and his vampire brother. My only regret is that I read this so fast and so soon in the year.

This, to me, redeemed The Fear Institute's shortcomings - it was also so wonderful to have more of Horst's perspective.
This series has been steadily progressing into becoming one of my favourites. Howard's narrative stylings remain captivating and not only are Horst and Johannes engaging protagonists, but this book features a multitude of other interesting and amusing characters.
Annnd, we're back. So much better than The Fear Institute.
Horst Cabal is alive once again! ...Actually he is undead once again. He has been resurrected by some secret organization that want to create a world which is run by monsters and they want Horst, for some reason, to be a general. Horst goes to his brother for help to save the world.
Another great addition to the Johannes Cabal series! I really enjoyed how the story was laid out with the first half or so Horst telling Johannes what had been happening and the second half in the present with Johannes and Horst (and more) working together. I feel like we're getting closer and closer to Johannes' ultimate goal but I can't help but have a huge sense of dread. I can't wait to finish the series.
