Really informative and useful for learning some structural ideas about storytelling, and some interesting discussion of why, but it really stretches itself out by reaffirming the same points over and over with different examples of the same things

This is a great assimilation of a lot of knowledge about story in general. There's a ton of references to popular media and great sense of skepticism regarding single answers that I appreciate. Definitely worth a read, it helped me clarify the structure of some of the things I was writing and will be a reference for me later.

An amazing collection of insights in film plotting and structure that really captures the special qualities of the films the author references.
But I got bored at half book because its hard to feel like there is something more than the point that there is a structure and it works because the films are good. Orchestrated tension release, heroes journeys, character transformation etc.. all these things happen but after some pages you realise you are not quite learning a general pattern but rather looking for a confirmation for what you know works because the films are all great.
I think would be a useful text for a tv screenwriter to make sure they didn’t miss a trick. And will be loved by film critics looking for depth.
