Seems like August Wilson spent 95% of his time coming up with nuanced symbolism and 5% coming up with a boring plot to fit that symbolism. Cool ending, though.

An interesting and thought provoking play. It felt a little repetitive at times, and the ending felt a little cheesy, but there were some powerful speeches that feel very culturally relevant and important.

Read this book for my Theatre class. I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, it’s good because we see how the characters deal with their dilemma. We learn a little lesson about the piano in the story (Ha! Notice my play on words? Lol). But on the other hand, the characters are using language that I’m not used to and don’t really like. I just don’t like the lingo. The story is okay though. Got kind of annoying when the characters kept fighting about that darn piano. I got tired of the arguments. But other than that, it was okay. Interesting script book. Wish we would read more modern books in school though.

While some (literally and metaphorically) haunting scenes, an admirably conceived ending, and one truly sexy scene, the play is ultimately far too repetitive.

Easy to see the influence this had on Intimate Apparel.
