Seemed very lovely but just not in the right headspace
I definitely have mudlarking tendencies, so I was probably always going to love this. And I absolutely did. It will probably be in one of my top ten books of the year. For those who don't know, a mudlark is some who searches river mud for items that have been lost or discarded, particularly along the Thames in London. I managed to go once before lockdown and this book has made me itch to go again as soon as I can. Maiklem describes various sections of foreshore and what she finds there, as well as going into just the right amount of detail about the history of what and who might have lived and worked nearby and the types of items they lost or discarded. I found it enlightening, entertaining and really well written.

This was an interesting book about this hobby. As a non-Londoner, it was helpful to have a map in the beginning of the book. I wish there were more pictures of the objects to help the reader visualize what she was describing.
4.5 stars
This book was not quite what I expected, but I loved every second of it anyway.
It was more autobiographical than I thought when I got this but I found that it added so much more emotion, experience, and interest into the book.
There are such incredible things that Maiklem has found and she has so much knowledge of history, the river and the things she has found there. She writes with such beauty, including the smell, the sound, and feel of the river. I was absolutely fascinated.
I also highly recommend the audiobook read by Lara Maiklem herself, it was so calming and relaxing, lulling me to sleep every night. A great book.

The act of mudlarking is a type of time-travel where objects kept secret by the Thames decide that it's time to share their story and reveal London's hidden history. Sounds great, right? And it was for the most part but some chapters were clearly more interesting than others and by the end something about the writing style made it seem extremely repetitive. But did it make me want to try mudlarking myself? Yes.
Loads of fun.. even more so after I found her IG account.
