Kept me awake longer than I'd planned, and I have ordered the next one in the series about half way through.

This book was pretty slow, and hard to get through at times, but it made up for it with the main character, Paks, who's determined, loyal, smart, and kind. She's strong and will not give up, but she's also allowed to be vulnerable. The world-building is really good too, and I like that it shows the world from Paks's perspective, with limited knowledge of geography and politics that grows as the book progresses. Also, although the words are never said(it's set in the middle ages) Paks is pretty explicitly described to be aromantic and asexual, and I love how the representation is written.

Elizabeth Moon is a former Marine, and it shows in all the best ways. The fight scenes are visceral and vivid. The main character resonated with me. I foisted this on everyone I knew. Highly recommended fantasy military science fiction that's intelligent and fun. A nice change in a genre that's rife with testosterone-poisoned crap.
