Oh, the feels! I have so much respect for Cynthia Hand for taking us through loss & grief the way she did. I want to see her end up with Christian in the end, though.
It was a little anti-climatic, as most of the action happened about 3/4 of the way into the book. I'm very involved with the characters, so I want to keep reading the series, but it isn't for the quality of the writing.
I do like Clara, the main character, so I am interested to see how the writer manages to do with graduation and college coming up. There are definitely still a few loose ends that need to be wrapped up.

I loved this one just as much - and possibly more - than the first. I can't wait for the third book to come out.
I was really worried going into this book that it would completely dissolve into YA trope goop, and that everything I appreciated about the first one would vanish. Thankfully, that is not the case here at all. Though Hand does tiptoe in the water, she does so with grace. She doesn’t ever simply plunk down right into the mud where others have gone before her. I really appreciated this. I also appreciated the fact that though there was a love triangle, it made sense, and the heroine dealt with it with wry humor. I think in this case, a choice between Tucker and Christian is necessary, and it makes sense that Clara would struggle with this choice. On one hand, she has Tucker, the sweet boy who loves her. Tucker and her’s relationship is realistic for high school. It isn’t made of instant love or melodramatic promises. Its sweet and bubbly and perfect, and it makes sense why Clara risks everything for him. On the other hand, there is Christian, who is amazingly attractive and also, oh yes, her destiny (because of the angel dreams). This all makes sense, and the author doesn’t let the triangle become a huge melodrama. Although its present, Clara obviously has some other issues to face.
I also really appreciate that Clara’s relationship with her family and friends is really present here. Clara’s mom is an important part of her life, and though her brother is becoming more frustrating, that is explained. In a lot of YA books, parents are mostly absent, so it was nice to see a family that really cared for each other and tried to help each other. I also loved that Clara realized that she had dropped some of her friends, and she made an effort to fix it.
On the downside, there were some parts of the plot that were BLINDINGLY obvious from early on, and some other aspects that still haven’t been solved. This installment doesn’t move the series forward much, but it is really fun to read. Its like a perfect chocolate bar. Its exactly what you want to read sometimes, and while there may not be much that is really substantive here, its so entertaining and wonderful. That’s exactly what I wanted going in, and that is exactly what Hand delivers.
So, if you’re looking for some YA candy, then I would definitely recommend this series. I can’t wait for the next one in the series!

What a cute book, just simple enough but not too much, loved it and I'm glad I picked it up
I really do love Cynthia Hand's writing. This series is engrossing and every time a new book comes out I feel like it's Christmas. There are no moments where I'm bored or cringe because the characters do something so out of character or uncomfortable that I feel bad for the author.
I'm still guessing where this series is going, but I'm enjoying the ride.

I swear clara deserves the world. Tucker, i wish he was real
Hallowed was definitely an amazing sequel to Unearthly. Yet again, the author built an incredible plot around Clara, her friends, family, and the angel-bloods. It’s hard to describe what I loved about this book when I could just say everything...so I’ll try listing instead:
1. The setting--breath-taking descriptions of the mountains.
2. The new characters & character development - learning about Clara’s dad, seeing why Jefferey is always so angsty, learning about her mom’s past, meeting the other angel-bloods, and the boys, of course.
3. Speaking of the boys - whose team are you on? Sash & I absolutely disagree...big time...*heated conversation ensues*. I think Christian & Tucker change a lot throughout the story...my “team” allegiance is different from the book before.
4. Foreshadowing--the author did an amazing job of keeping the readers & Clara in the dark...I loved not being able to guess what was going to happen! Too often do I read books that I could tell you exactly what was going to happen about 50 pages into the book...this was NOT one of them.
5. The ending...oh...the ending. Lots of sobbing, heartache, but also strength. Cynthia Hand makes it so easy for her readers to not only sympathize with her characters, but empathize as well. Putting myself in Clara’s shoes was painful, but enlightening.
I think this series has a really empowering and spiritual theme overall...I love stories about angels and Nephilim...but this is definitely one of my favorite because it is less about the love triangle or high school...and much more about fulfilling one’s purpose in life.

Loved it. Achingly beautiful. Am in need of more Kleenex.
