I decided to read this book mostly because it's a classic piece of literature. It also seemed like it might be interesting because of the subject matter. At times it was very good, but ultimately it was not a book that I loved. Some parts of the book were hard to understand because of the fact that it is written in a more ancient style. Also, some parts of it seemed a bit anti-climactic to me. One of the things that I did like were the clever punishments that Dante assigned to the sinners. I liked how the punishments seemed to fit the crime in most cases. Overall, the book was just okay for me.

It feels weird to rate this but not to review it? The Longfellow translation I felt was typically smooth though there were moments when it got a little rough. However, Peter Bondanella is a 10/10 guide through this, my own Virgil, and his notes in the back provided so much context that I realized that Dante was literally just throwing shade on people left and right. My man included people who hadn't even died yet, that's how much he hated them lol

You ever just write an epic poem to mock the people of your time??

Honestly I have never read a book that was so much of a drag and still made me gasp in horror. You have to applaud Dante for writing something so incredibly gory and descriptive that still made me drowsy reading. To be fair it was a good read and I would recommend it to anyone who likes poetry or gothic stories. Personally just not quite my cup of tea but if you enjoy reading about demons poking spears into peoples butts go for it.
