I love this book so much that I after I closed the cover, I wrapped my arms around it in a hug. Jacqueline Woodson's words are so vivid and beautiful, and she tells the story of her childhood and the people and places she has known with such warmth and love. I felt completely absorbed in her world. It's rare for me to read a book a second time, but I have a feeling I will be coming back to this one.
Wonderful in its simplicity and richness. I want to visit my own memories now.

I loved this book. It is written in free verse, and is a memoir of the author's life growing up through the 1960s and 1970s. I highly recommend this for grades 4th - 8th, but also for adults. Just because this is written as a children's book, adults can relate and will enjoy the meaning of the poems.

This is a book about everything: family, friendship, stories, home, names, history, hope, listening, writing... It is beautiful and full of emotion without being ornate or overwrought. A memoir in free verse, Brown Girl Dreaming offers much that any reader can connect with - but never loses the author's particular voice. This is, in the purest and most wonderful way possible, Jacqueline Woodson's story.
enjoyed her other books so much more - but that’s a high bar. i was in the mood for plot v vignettes. but i think i’m a JW completist. if you likes this one— next two books even better.
Such a vivid memoir of early childhood, evocative of the time and place. So easy to relate to in many ways even if your circumstances were different from the author's. Written in verse, it's an easy book to get through in one sitting, but make sure to savor the lyricism.
This may be my favorite YA book that I’ve read in a long time - a beautiful, poetic journey from birth to early adolescence. This is the journey of Jacqueline Woodson - around the country, through divorce and death, around the world. She writes of being a “slow” reader but always feeling in love with being a writer. This book would allow a wide variety of students to feel seen.
Super quick read that is very lyrical and beautifully written without needing to provide too much detail.
