This is one of the most beautiful books I've ever read.

It's simple. Lyrical. There's a wonderful humming flow to the whole thing, so gentle and so consistent that I found myself carried to the end without my usual awareness of how close to the end I am.

If I'd know, I might have slowed down so I could savor it a little more.

This book is delicious, honest, and creates a vibrant, five-senses glimpse into an era and world of wild changes and deep conflict, into a real family with all its warts and jewels, and into the mind of a wonderful girl who learns what "brilliant" is for her and earns her way with words.

As a dyslexic author, I FELT those sections. If you've read this book, you know the ones I mean.

I initially picked this up from the library, but loved it so much I had to buy it after.

Read this book. Get comfortable. You won't want to put it down.

I am so sad that I put off reading this for so long. It was absolutely lovely.

Absolutely beautiful. I could almost smell the SC air in her childhood and feel her growing need for words in her preteen years.

pg. 14 "You'll face this in your life someday, my mother will tell us over and over again. A moment when you walk into a room and no one there is like you."

pg. 194 "Our feet are beginning to belong in two different worlds....We don't know how to come home and leave home behind us."

pg. 318 "I believe in one day and someday and this perfect moment called Now."

June 2024: Reread for book club. Just as good or even better than the first time. Some quotes I loved:

“How can I explain to anyone that stories are like air to me, I breathe them in and let them out over and over again.”

“I want to catch words one day. I want to hold them then blow gently, watch them float right out of my hands.”

“I work hard, he says, I treat people like I want to be treated. God sees this, God knows.”

“Even the silence
has a story to tell you.
Just listen. Listen.”

Nov 2022: I waited way too long to read this. What a delightful book.
