Even growing up decades after her, her words were so relatable, as well as beautiful and emotional.
I fell in love with this book.
I was so surprised when I first turned back the pages and this was a prose style book! I have never read Woodson (I know, so dumb!) and was immediately wrapped up in her words.
I read this on the airplane, and must have looked a little nuts. I was furiously tearing through this book and flipping back and forth from my page to the front where the family tree was drawn. Constantly wanted to reference her family and get to know them.
I thoroughly recommend this book for any reader -- YA is more than YA. Duh!
The writer is beautiful, the story is absolutely nuanced and complex. I feel privileged to have read these words :)

I listened to the audiobook and it was a treat to my ears.
4.5. I think this would have felt like more to me if I were younger
Such a beautiful book written from the perspective of a child's hopes and dreams. Today's news playing in the background of civil rights, feminism, and religious beliefs. Written in verse like"Daddy's" song.

I listened to this as an audiobook which the author read. I am so glad I did. What a beautiful, beautiful collection of poems about the authors childhood. This was a library book but I am definitely going to buy it as a print copy.
Glad I picked this one up! It was different reading about her childhood through verse, but still good.
I enjoyed it, I didn't love it. The writing was beautiful and it was filled with so many nuggets of goodness. So much so that I didn't connect with the story. I forgot more than I thought I would; it's almost like I have I general outline of the plot with no filler.
I just don't think free verse is for me. For those who like it, it's worth the read.
