This memoir in verse rings with clarity and truth, with wisdom sparkling that is told in the voice of a child with the reflection of the adult young Jackie is to be. Book tasting winter 2020. Personal note: I am so happy I read this book. It touched my heart. I was delighted to get a glimpse into where some of her picture books were born. What a truly inspiring and kind soul.

Another good book by Woodson that is getting Newbery buzz. A novel in verse that chronicles her early life split between Ohio and the South. I liked it more than I thought I would.

Beautifully written. So much said with minimal words. Loved it.

This book made my heart happy.

I can't believe I waited so long. Woodson is one of my favorites and this will be in my top 100.

Beautifully written. I loved this book!

Brown Girl Dreaming is a beautifully written (and read) story about the author's childhood during the civil rights movement in New York and South Carolina. We read many stories about the 1960s and 1970s, Jim Crow laws, and segregation, but Jacqueline Woodson offers a fresh take by not only writing from her perspective as a child, but also by detailing her accounts in verse.

The audiobook is narrated by the author herself and Woodson's voice reads as whimsical and dreamy as you can imagine, truly bringing you into the mind of the brown girl dreaming.
