I'm gonna be honest. This volume is probably where the Horimiya series started losing steam for me. By now we've been introduced to a lot of different characters outside of the core 4 group. Hori and Miyamura's relationship has progressed, but volume six is where I start to see some troubling, and frankly unsatisfying, things happening in the manga. This is hereby my review for volumes 6-15 (or what's out of it). I had no problems with volumes 1-5. Highly recommended for those.
First, I am not a fan of the new style of story telling that has cropped up. Instead of having a story that crosses several chapters and volumes, it seems like volume six is the beginning of snapshot/short story moments. There may be four or five problems that are introduced and resolved within a single volume. It just makes it seem like continuing the story isn't worth it as the focus becomes the group and not the developing characters and romance of Hori/Miya.
Next, characterization. What the heck happened? The basis of Horimiya is Hori/Miya. Two teens who lead vastly different lives from their friends at home. Two teens who find each other and fall in love for who they are, not who they present themselves to be. Miyamura's character design is amazing volumes 1-6. His long hair and piercings seemed to be a large part of his past, character development, and personality. Hori is strong and responsible, but ultimately lonely taking over the responsibilities of her parents. There's no resolution to any of this at all so far. Miyamura cuts his hair (a crime really) and just begins to conform to the norm which is apparently a (sort of) dumb pretty boy. Hori becomes a caricature of herself once her parents are introduced. She becomes violent, petty, possessive, and honestly, just mean. It's such a weird progression that seems like it was done for comedy. I am not laughing.
Finally, I'm just overall disappointed. This manga started off so promising and then fell into tropes and bad characterization. The art stays top notch. There are obviously characters that I loved (I stayed for 15 volumes y'all), but unless the story gains more substance and Hori starts facing some consequences for sort of abusing her boyfriend, I'm out.
Volumes 1-5: 5 stars
Volumes 6-15: 3 stars
