Temperance Brennan is called to help identify victims in a plane crash that kills all aboard. While she is searching the site around the crash she comes across a foot and has to fight off a group of coyotes for possession. There is something odd about the foot - the age and racial profile don't seem to fit anyone who was on the plane. Also, the decay makes it seem that the foot has been in the forest for longer than the crash victims. When she starts asking questions though, she gets blocked by those in charge. She is eventually discredited in the investigation but can't let go. When one of her colleagues is murdered while helping her identify the foot, she really begins to worry. What she eventually uncovers is too awful for words and involves many powerful people.
