Wow. I did not expect to like this so much when i decided to take it with me in a random hostel in Cusco, Peru. I have now carried it all the way to Brazil and am very happy about it. The atmosphere was perfect and the characters' motives deeply explored. I love that the end leaves things open for interpretation and i mean Simonopio is just my favourite character, of course. Also the theme of the bees! Yes, I do recommend!

Joyita de inicio a fin, que personajes tan bellos, y los que no, que fácil odiarlos ❤️ las máquinas de coser y las abejas tienen un nuevo significado para mí

Plot or Character Driven: A mix

I thought the book would be more magical based on the description but the magical elements really fell flat. Overall, I found the book to be very circular. I felt like they rehashed things over and over. I kept thinking I was experiencing deja vu. I repeatedly thought to myself that something I just read, I had read a few pages or chapters before. There were several times that I felt the narrative was leading to a climax that never came. Not to mention the long boring and overly drawn out leads up to the non-existent climaxes. The most redeeming part of the book was the relationship between Simonopio and Francisco Jr.

This is an instance where dual narrating does not work.. It was quickly and felt circular. There was also many times where the story felt like it was built into a climax that never came.

This is a long book and the magical realism means a lot of description and less action. It isn’t bad, but I got bored and didn’t care to keep going as not knowing the ending didn’t seem to matter.
