I only finished this because it was for a book club. Way too long, too wordy, too repetative.
I'm a lover of Mexican folklore and legends and this book spoke to me on so many levels. Very well crafted, the characters became my friends except for the coyote, of course. Outstanding read!

Me

I just never wanted to pick it up to keep reading. Likely too slow for me.
Wow wow wow. This was such a beautiful journey of a book. Some parts were a bit long but the story and characters have so much depth. Did I cry? Yes? Ugly tears? Absolutely. Did I thoroughly enjoy this book? No I loved this book.
This was an unexpected and a pleasant one read.
I do not read Spanish, so I cannot speak to the quality of the translation other than to say that this reads very well. Had I not known it was originally in another language, I would never have guessed.
The mystery of Simonopio’s origins and powers is never completely explained, but it doesn’t need to be, and the exploration of farming life in Mexico during the Revolution all combine to weave an interesting backdrop to this family’s tale. I was taken in immediately and enjoyed my trip to this world thoroughly.

This book took me a while to read, but let me say it was beautiful. It has everything: a bond of brotherly love, an explanation of family ties to land, the past, and each other, murder, sadness, and utter joy. This book had me sniffling and holding back tears on an airplane and in equal measure smiling from ear to ear. Beautiful.
