I absolutely loved this book. It really had it all: interesting, well-developed characters, an intricate and spellbinding story and lyrical prose. I listened to the audio version, and the narrators' voices were perfect for the story - like listening to honey. I was sad when the book was over. This should definitely be your next read!
Simonopio is a remarkable child, found as an infant abandoned under a bridge and covered in live bees. As he grows, his bees follow him, teaching him to explore the Mexican town in which he lives and even see what is to come. While some in his town see him as bad luck or even the devil in human form, the family that takes him in know that he has a gift, one that may change their fate.
This winding, lyrical tale is full of beautiful prose, touching moments, and real Mexican history. It's a powerful story of destiny, grief, growth, and family - the one you're born into and the one you choose. It's a story that makes you want to believe in something beyond what you can see.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Enthralling. Epic! Really wonderful. Try the audio version — it’s so well done!
5/5 ⭐

Although written beautifully, this book meanders to the point of distraction. The details and tangents disrupt the flow of the storyline. The book utilized techniques similar to other Latin American writers, especially magical realism. Ms. Segovia completed the novel before COVID; however, the sections about the 1918 flu rang true (based on the current pandemic). As another reviewer commented, "this was a book I wanted to love." Alas, it was not to be. It is a book, "that never ends."
Beautifully written. If it is any more artfully done in its native language I don't want to know about it because I'll be jealous that I won't be able to enjoy it that way too.
There are elements of magic but for the most part this is just a story of family, blood or otherwise, and humanity. It's a folktale of the coyote and the lion wrapped up in a novel that sucks you into a intricately drawn picture of historic Mexico and its people.

Audiobooked this one during lesson preps and in early mornings to “ease in” to my day. Loved it. A really beautiful story from a gifted Latinx author that has NOTHING to do with migrant life or any of the more common themes. Just a complex and colorful look into one family and one mysterious outsider who saves them in a myriad of ways. Soothing, poetic prose and just what my tired mind needed it to be.

Not at all what I was expecting, but turned out to be so beautiful and quite different to what I normally read. I loved it.
I enjoyed it but not life changing. Interesting story.
