Great historical family drama. That goes very in depth in the persons lives. I enjoyed this. It’s very slow paced but you spend time with the characters and get to know them so you are very invested.

Dreadfully slow-moving story, and neither the characters nor prose engaged me. I was able to skim the book without missing much, but I would have abandoned this book if I didn't have to finish it for bookclub.

There wasn’t anything I can say I didn’t enjoy about this but I just didn’t get engaged with it at all and it felt like a slog even though it’s much shorter than anything else I’ve read recently…
I liked this book. It is lyrical and beautiful and heartbreaking and confusing.
A boy with a cleft palate is found under a bridge. He is raised as a member of the wealthy family of small town. He has magic and bees and he does some wondrous things. And though this often seems like his story, it isn't. In the end, everything comes out.
Several parts of this story made me cry. But, I still have one of those warm, contented feelings with a bit of bittersweet notes after finishing this story.

Really interesting to read about the Spanish flu during this time in our lives. Loved the multitude of ways to communicate with and understand other beings.
Lovely book, beautiful writing. I love a little fantasy mixed in with fiction - historical fiction in this case! I loved the setting of this book in early 20th century Mexico. The writing is so evocative and colorful, both dreamlike and real.
I did a combination of reading this book on my Kindle and listening to it on Audible (love that Whispersync feature!) I generally prefer to read hard copies because I taken in and retain more of the book; however, the recorded version is read just beautifully. The two readers (one male, one female) had wonderful voices and added a richness and complexity to the writing.
Highly recommend.
