Beautiful prose and themes on family and memories. The bad? Very slow beginning and slightly racist… Also didn’t love the book’s stance on private land ownership. I understand the book is historically accurate to how a rich, white, land-owning family in northern mexico would have felt/acted at the time (as per the author’s response to a reader’s question on goodreads about the racist portrayal of a character). However, to me a racist portrayal simply is racist unless another point of view is considered and the reader is “clued in” on the racism - which is not the case here. People who read this book may not have the lens/historical context to see/understand the racism which is what makes it so dangerous.
This was such a lovely and unique story. I don't think I've ever read anything like it. Complex, it took me along for the tale of a life in a way that really drew me in.
Creo que venía con muchas expectativas. Me gustó el tema de las abejas y como avisaban sobre ciertos temas agrícolas y climáticos.
Sentí que el desarrollo de personajes era poquito. No sé... Me costó leerlo

I tried to read the original in Spanish, so happy to find the English edition
DNF - beautiful prose but the story didn’t feel like it was progressing at all. Lots of different POVs and they were all repeating the same events but going nowhere.
Set during the 1918 Flu Pandemic and Mexican War, this is the story of a strangely but beautifully gifted child and his impact on a family and community.
