Segovia's writing is simply stunning. Just like Isabel Allende, she weaves a rich and slow-burning story with a bit of magical realism and fascinating characters that stick with you even when you’re not reading.
Narrated by an elderly man recalling his childhood growing up with his adopted brother in Linares, Mexico, the story is mostly touching, sometimes tense and sad, and ends on a seriously bittersweet note.
The book came so close to making my all-time favorites list…the only reason it didn’t is because I was inexplicably reluctant to pick it up at times despite adoring it. I blame social media for speeding up my brain!
Read this book! It’s absolutely beautiful.

This is the first translated Spanish fiction book I have read. I thought it was very interesting. I like how the author used historical events in a fictional story.
Mi abuela (Tita) de 87 años es una ávida lectora con un muy buen ojo para elegir los mejores libros sin que se los recomienden. A veces parece que es la portada, a veces el título, pero no falla. La mayoría de libros que leo me los recomienda ella.
Recientemente tuvo un accidente y tiene que estar en cama con su cuerpo inmovilizado. Quise leerle mientras estaba recostada pero se negaba.

En una sola tarde su cara cambió: No quiere dejar de escuchar, y se sorprende a sí misma riéndose y haciendo comentarios de la historia.
Cada página leída nos transporta lejos de la cama de hospital, hasta La Hacienda de la Amistad. Por breves momentos no estamos aquí, estamos oliendo aire freso y flores de azahar.
Ya me había enamorado de éste libro, pero con ésto que ha hecho por mi Tita me siento además agradecida con Sofía por escribir y compartir algo tan bello. Es cierto que este libro huele a lavanda, naranjas y miel.

This was a hard book to read. I enjoy reading stories from other cultures and traditions, but this story was so slow, so drawn out, so long that I struggled to read it. I originally started this in May, picked it back up/restarted it in November and forced myself to finish it because it was mistakenly marked as one of my books read for my 2022 challenge and I couldn’t delete it.
