A fittingly manic art-style complements a terrifyingly unhinged portrayal of Joker. Some solid suspense throughout.

In what is honestly the most nauseating volume I've ever read, DC manages to undo every bit of character advancement that's occurred since they rebooted. With the Joker coming off as practically an unbeatable, flawless villain, Batman doing careless shit like
Spoilerrevealing his secret identity to call Joker's bluff, which backfires, and knowing Joker's been in the Bat Cave and not saying anything
, and a ten-year-old being graphically tortured, I can honestly say that DC had already hit rock bottom, but busted out the pickax and kept digging. The worst part is that the majority of the characters (save for
SpoilerBruce and Tim
) are written rather in character and in-line with their pre-52 characterization. This makes it damn near impossible to read without wanting to vomit- watching your favorite characters get tortured for no other reason than to have DC milk money from a darker, edgier version of Death in the Family is ridiculous. It's so obviously a publicity stunt (from
SpoilerBarbara's torture being a parallel to The Killing Joke
to
SpoilerJason and Tim's fathers being dangled in front of them
) that its execution and delivery come off as fake and wrong.
You're honestly better off not reading this. For the sake of us all.

You thought Heath Ledger's Joker was the epitome of evil chaos? You haven't seen anything yet. The Joker returns a year after having is face skinned. He steals back his face and straps it onto his . . . Uh, face (sometimes even upside down). The Joker says that now all is stripped away and he is his true self. Now the villain acts more like a super villain. In one of his first appearances, he sneaks into the police station and kills an entire room of armed police officers . . . alone.

The Joker misses his old adversary, "Bats." Batman's "family," according to the Joker, has made him soft and weak. Therefore, the Joker intends to kill off all of Batman Inc. Snyder does his homework for these graphic novels. He dives into the history of Batman lore and makes subtle nods to the past. All of your Batman favorites are here: Catwoman, Penguin, Clayface, Scarecrow, Two Face, the Riddler, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, the familiar faces in the GCPD, the numerous incarnations of Robin, etc. The artwork is incredible here and is sometimes outright disturbing. This "new Joker" is more evil than other previous incarnation. This is a page turner!
