"Agora, se precisares de saber mais alguma coisa... basta perguntares. Vou estar por aqui. E quando eu não estiver... podes sempre perguntar a outra pessoa. Nunca estás sozinho na Terra."
Just like the majority of his books, Here We Are is deeper than a few pictures and some words. But unlike his other books, Here We Are was written as a tribute for Jeffers' soon to be son, the ideas that he has and wishes to pass on to his son written into the pages of the book. What the earth is, how he should treat people, and all the things the earth has to offer. I love the sentimental nature of why Jeffers wrote the book and the personal nature of the words and the pictures is what draws me to it. I think that this book could be used for an earth day lesson or maybe an introduction to a unit on space or a lesson on culture.
Sweet idea, but a fairly simplistic view of the world.
I just read this book to my 5 month old and I am in love with it!!!! I want to add this book to my personal library.
Eye-catching and interesting illustrations which help to make learning about earth and the solar system more engaging for children. Most of the pictures are labelled and it is all in colour which helps to make learning more fun. There are also small amounts of writing with only the key facts which should help to make the book more enjoyable as the facts will be more memorable due to there being a manageable amount. The font used in the book for labelling mirrors that of a child’s handwriting which could help make it more relatable to children.
One of the key themes of the book is explaining how important it is to look after yourself and the planet you live on along with everybody and everything else that lives there. This is an important message they are translating to children, therefore the book could be used alongside a PSHE lesson or when learning about the environment in geography or during environment days/weeks if the school holds these.
This book could be used alongside the teaching of adjectives with young children as some of the pictures are labelled with adjectives. There are also lots of opportunities for links within science e.g. learning about the body or the stars. There is also a very good double-page spread which explains how people may look different but we are all people. This would be a great page to bring children’s attention to during PSHE.
