An interesting prequel to Practical Magic. I loved learning more of Maria Owens back story and hearing the journey of her life. Loved the ending and I look forward to reading The Rules of Magic next.

this book took me way too long to finish, i had to borrow it from the library twice because i don’t give up hahaha
it wasn’t anything remarkable for me tbh and i didn’t really much care for any of the characters and the men absolutely irritated me with their 1600s backwards logic
i really did enjoy the vivid picture the author painted and the descriptions but at times it was very very wordy and repetitive with each different perspective looking at the same scene

I just love the way Alice Hoffman writes about witches--I want to be one. Listening to this audio makes me want to plant a garden full of healing and hurting plants. Will I? No. But the fact that she makes me think about it is a good thing! I didn't remember much of the other magic books by her, but the quality of writing came through for me. Love how she works in historical truths to her books and how her women are so strong.

Quality of the writing is not great, but it almost works given the novel’s historical setting. Plot is probably the most solid of the four Practical Magic novels, but even then is pretty pale.

A birthday recommendation. I read this book quickly and easily. It’s a right old yarn , about witches and occultism in an historical setting. I’d say it would be a good holiday read- nothing too heavy with a good pace. It has got more holes in it than Emmental and some of the action is very contrived and completely fanciful but somehow it’s compelling (perhaps a spell in the book??) I raced through it despite feeling it has little literary merit
