a truly inspiring story. I'm going to open a shoe store and run for myself, not for a man or a pterodactyle, for myself.

What the hell

Am I sad this is going to be the first book I finished in 2020? Yes, yes I am. But! At least I finished it and I can now promptly forget it!
What a weird experience. I don’t know who I’d recommend this book to... it wasn’t bad bad. But it was bad, and I feel slightly dirty. Time to shower.

Gentle reminder anyone can publish anything

Probably closer to a 2.5 or so.

When you see a book titled Hot Pterodactyl Boyfriend, you pretty much have to scoop it up, right? I got an early copy of this, was very excited, and it left me... I don't know.

The story takes place at a high school where a pterodactyl randomly shows up. And he's hot. And the girls like him, as do a lot of people in town. And he plays football. And when you get romantic with the pterodactyl, you're branded in a way. and the whole thing really turns the town upside down.

The book was inspired by a quote at a writing summit, where an author recommended to the writers to not "go writing your hot pterodactyl boyfriend novel." So, of course, this guy does exactly that and kind of proves exactly why it was a bad idea. I still wonder if there was a good was to put this story together, but there was a lot of ridiculousness beyond the initial conceit added in on this (including an ending where it all completely goes off the rails) that ultimately makes this not even too much fun as a curiosity. I can't even recommend this as sort of campy fun, unfortunately, it just doesn't work.

What the hell

This one's trying too hard. It's a bit all over the place. Also, the author has his pet terms that he just cannot do without, "wrangle dance" being the favorite. It's used as much as possible, without ever giving any real explanation.

I thought it sounded funny and clever, but no. I waded through the beginning and things did pick up for much of the middle--so much that I really enjoyed the character development and plot, but then the ending was rushed and weird and not cohesive.

Too much work for too little reward. Skip it.

Wowser. Whatta book!

I've been describing this book to people as "imagine Reece Witherspoon's character in Election, but she went to the same high school as Bella and Edward from Twilight, except that Edward isn't a vampire, he's a hot pterodactyl called Pyke."

I loved the energy in this book, and how the author didn't hold anything back. It was weird, but it was wonderful. I can imagine this book being a bit like marmite, some people loving, and some people hating, but I am most definitely a lover. This is one of the joys of fiction, and especially YA fiction. You can stretch language. You can be weird. You can have teenage girls and their mothers all falling for a pterosaur and having their noses turn purple. Because why not???

I love that this book didn't take itself too seriously, and yet it ended up being quite thought-provoking and moving in the end. That's a tough thing to do, and I can't wait to see what this author does next!

I loved this book! Sheila has firm control of herself and her high school until an interspecies exchange student flies in. Spike the pterodactyl shakes up everything, including her life.
