4.5 - I never would have guessed at such a character-driven book based on that synopsis. But wow was this unexpected and entirely refreshing.
It was an interesting concept but did not keep my interest. The characters were not appealing.

My first 5-star rating in a long time. I had recently been sucked into a wormhole of trashy fiction with very little merit, but addicting story lines.
The reason I liked this book so much is because it had that addicting story line/romance/suspense/mystery, and also some compelling and worthwhile ideas.
Fun, fast but also intriguing.

All the birds in the sky was recommended to me a few times but the synopsis never held me. Upon finally reading this highly enjoyable book, I realise where the reviews are going wrong.
By describing this book purely by its plot or premise, you miss the heart of this story.
Patricia and Laurence are endearing characters who you feel protective of as you watch them grow, both under harsh conditions, into fascinating people.
The bond they share and the skills they grind away at, keep you invested until the environmental subtext surges to the fore and gives them the perfect arena to hone their learned skills and finally settle the nature of their relationship.
All of which is told in a Pratchett-esque irreverent style, with a pacing that I found as refreshing as it was unpredictable.
You are rewarded for enduring a long section of bullying and parental neglect by a fast paced third act which keeps you turning the page until the very end.

Wow, this book was not what I expected at all! It is WEIRD and delicious and fantastical but also very real. I’ve read the last chapter twice and I think I may need to go back for a third go…
