I just did not get into this book. On the surface I should have loved it (I love fantasy, sci-fi, YA) but the characters felt flat to me, the story never drew me in.

Beautiful writing.

This started out good, if not strong. I really did enjoy the first half of the book. Starting with the sex scene, however, it all went downhill. It became such a terrible will-they-won't-they with the fate of the world inexplicably hanging in the balance. I would've given the first half 3 or 4 stars, so my overall 1-star rating should tell you how awful I thought the second half was.

It’s ok

Wildly imaginative, but not my cup of tea. I felt like I was reading a meta story that was entirely a metaphor for something. I powered through it and gave it a chance.

A good book without any specific bad character but I didn't like how the parents of both main characters acted. What a nice way to destroy your kid's self-confidence right?

Gets bonus points for containing the phrase “locally made organic Pop-Tarts.”

This starts out like a stereotypical bullied-but-talented-nerds-find-their-place-in-the-world story, but the protagonists find that their gifts and enthusiasm lead to regrets and moral ambiguity. That rings true, and is the best aspect of the novel. Anders’ writing is also generally entertaining and occasionally beautiful, and the story moves quickly. It's unsatisfying in other ways: the secondary characters lack depth, and the deaths and calamities that occur lack weight.

DID NOT FINISH: 77%

Felt too real. Will pick it back up again when I feel up for it.

DNF'd at page 136.

Juvenile writing style, glorifies abuse and bullying with no repercussions, and weird sub plot of an "assassin" who is not actually contracted by anyone but wants to kill the main characters (children) and plots to make them kill each other?
Reviews say it doesn't get better so I'll quit while I'm ahead.

While it took me a little bit to get into this book due to the first chapter not being what I had expected, the rest of the novel kept me reeled in. I only docked a star because of the very beginning, and the very end (which seemed too neat for me), and because I wish there had been more of this story!
