I have no idea how to review this book. There were moments where I wasn't sure I even liked it, but then it would do something really cool and redeem itself.
This book was a wild ride! Love how seamlessly the author intermingles magic and science, set in the backdrop of a potential global Apocalypse. Highly recommend!
Terrible waste of my time
Never been so lost. The story was ridiculous, the characters pathetic, and a writing style that needs improvement. Never fully grasped the authors point.

I absolutely adored it. The structure and writing style charmed me utterly and completely. You would think the melding of Anders's style and the subject content wouldn't work, but it does. Would I read it again? Maybe in a couple of years. But overall, still a funny, heartfelt, satisfying read.
Beautiful and interesting, but a bit too long.
I love the mix of magic and science, and also I enjoy how this book defies categorization. It's got the witches, magic school, talking animals — and also an AI, geeky nerds, collapse of civilization... what more could you ask for?

You really need to suspend your disbelief for every element of this story, not just the stuff you would expect (the sci fi/magic elements) but also the stuff you wouldn't expect (parent-child relationships, descriptions of ridiculous hipster restaurants, social media that is what we know and also not like we know). And this goes for the writing style itself (especially the dialogue!) which is super stilted and unnatural. If you can let yourself be taken for the ride, you may end up loving it. I did. Perfect vacation read.
I enjoyed this but there was something missing at the same time. Worth a read though. Especially if the reader doesn't normally pick science fiction or fantasy.
Cleverly written. It was a fun juxtaposition of science and magic.
What a wonderfully weird book. A solid 4.5, Anders' novel manages to be both a funny portrayal of the challenges of being a child and of being an adult, while weaving a magical tale about the fight between magic and science. I love that concept, and the way it is done here is deft, not taking itself too seriously even as many of the characters do. I loved Laurence and Patricia for the ebbs and flows of their weird lives as they find where they belong and if anyone can belong. The near future setting was also pretty compelling.
Great book with great characters! And the writing was so well done! Witches and supercomputers such a unique story!
